In Deadwood City, South Dakota in 1899 you will meet one of the fiercest women of the wild west, Calamity Jane! Calamity Jane is known for drinking, swearing, sharpshooting, and wearing men’s clothing which is unheard of a lady during this time. However, there is more than meets the eye. Through the act of storytelling Calamity Jane will recount her life of all the highs and lows that she faced. This piece is filled with great heart showing the importance of a mother’s love and family even in the roughest of places and the most unlikely characters. This one-woman show will entice viewers and keep them on the edge of their seats. Grab a drink with ol’ Calamity and join us for one hell of a ride!
Show Summary:
The one 30 minute act begins in a saloon in Deadwood City, South Dakota the year 1899. Calamity Jane enters the bar to have a drink. As she does so she realizes that the bar is filled with patrons. She decides to strike up a conversation with them. We learn that she is a mother and is trying to earn enough money to send her daughter, Jesse, to school. The more she drinks with her fellow patrons the more she recounts her life to people in the bar. We learn that there is more to her than her rough exterior. However, darkness looms over Calamity because she is unable to keep the money she earns due to her alcoholism. She struggles with loneliness, and the deaths of her loved ones along the way. Through recounting her life she realizes that she has survived in the past and will survive this.
This show is available for all venues. This show will also be conducive for reenactments, museum installations, impressions, and bars.
